What is Mohair?Mohair is the fleece of an Angora goat. Unlike the fleece from sheep, mohair is hair, not wool. It is much slicker and finer than wool and the fibers themselves are smaller in diameter than human hair. A large amount of mohair is produced in the U.S., and most of this is grown in Texas. However, all large processing facilities are currently in South Africa, so most U.S. mohair is sent there for cleaning and processing. It is then returned to the U.S. to be spun into cordage. We get our mohair as cord and then twist this into rope. Because we get spun cordage and don't produce our own, the size of the cordage determines the size of the rope. Therefore, our sizes of these mecates is more limited. |
