History of the Mohair Mecate

In the past, mohair mecates were readily available and used extensively. Luis Ortega, a well-known and highly respected rawhide braider, mentions using mohair mecates as an alternative to mane hair or cotton in his book, California Hackamore, which was published in 1948.

Changes in ranching practices over the years meant fewer angora goats and less mohair. The rising mohair prices coincided with the increasing availability and popularity of synthetics, and mohair mecates were replaced by nylon, polyester and polypropylene.

The last 100% mohair ropes we are sure of were made by Blind Sam Champlin and he retired in 1958 when he sold his equipment and business to Blind Bob Mills. When we purchased the last of Bob's equipment in 1996, we began developing our own mohair mecates. Now after a lengthy learning period, we are producing a high quality hand made mecate that will last for years.
