Measuring For Chinks
If you can't come to our shop to be measured for chinks, you can follow our
pictures below and send in your measurements.
When being measured for leggings of any kind, be sure to wear the same pants you will wear
under them as well as the boots you wear most when you ride.
When we make chinks for children and youths, we work from actual measurements
and then build in room to grow. Please give us actual measurements and then we
can talk about other variables like age, general body type, parent's body types,
growth spurts, etc.

Waist
The first measurement is the waist. This is not the actual waist, like
when taking clothing measurements, but rather where you want the top of
your chinks to be. Where Shy is measuring Blake is about typical. |
 |
Outseam to the Knee
Next is waist to the center of the knee. Measure down from where you
took the waist measurement to the center of the kneecap. |
 |
Outseam to Bottom of Fringe
Third is waist to the bottom of the fringe. Measure
from the same point you took the waist measurement down to where you would
like the fringe to end. We will need to know how long you want the fringe
to be and this is the best time to figure that out. A good rule of thumb
is to have the fringe start no less than 2" below the knee. This
provides protection to the knee itself. Blake would probably have at least
6" of fringe if we start cutting the fringe 3" below the
center of his knee and end it where Shy's thumb is in this photo. |
 |
Inseam to Knee
The next measurement is the inseam, taken from the
crotch to the center of the knee. It's important to take this measurement
at the same point on the knee as the outseam measurement as this tells us
how much rise to build into the chinks. |
 |
Inseam to Bottom of Kneepad
The last seam measurement is the inseam to the bottom
of the knee pad. The knee pad should end roughly 4 inches below the center
of the knee. Shy has the thumb of her left hand on the center of Blake's
knee to mark that spot so she can calculate the measurement 3 to 4 inches
below the center of the kneecap. Some people prefer it three inches below
center and others want it 4 or more inches below the kneecap. |
 |
Upper Thigh
The next measurement is the upper thigh. Take this one
at the highest part of the thigh. Be sure to shift your weight to the leg
being measured. Take this measurement on both legs. |
 |
Mid-thigh
The mid-thigh measurement should be taken halfway
between the crotch and the center of the kneecap. Again, weight should be
on the leg being measured and this measurement should be taken on both
legs. |
 |
Knee
The knee measurement is taken at the center of the
kneecap and should be taken on both legs. |
