Maysa's Moccasins
What's The Story?
We named these little cuties after our daughter because we wouldn't be making
them if it weren't for her.
When Maysa began pulling herself up and cruising around the furniture, I
asked her pediatrician what kind of footwear she should be wearing. She told me
that barefoot was best, but if Maysa had to wear shoes, find some with a soft, flexible
sole.
This was much easier said than done. After an exhaustive search of area shoe
stores yielded nothing of the sort, I resorted to catalog shopping. Again,
nothing came close to fitting the description. I did remember seeing a pattern
for a child's shoe in a trade magazine, so I hunted through back issues until I
found it.
We then modified the pattern a bit and came up with these little shoes. They
are sure cute and are fun to make. We have kept making them for friends and
family and intend to turn the manufacture of them over to Maysa some day when
she is old enough to make them herself. Materials
The moccasin uppers are soft chap leather on most of the shoes. However, we
have done a pair in black patent leather and a pair of basket stamped sandals.
The soles are the same English bridle leather used in our headstalls and other
leather products. However, we cut the shoe soles out of the softest part of the
hide. That way they are comfortable on little feet while still strong enough to
hold up when the little darling trots up and down the shale road. Pictures
Here are a few pictures of the moccasins. As you can see, they are available
in a wide variety of colors and styles. Click on photos to enlarge.
