Diameter, length and color are the three main choices to make when ordering a mecate.
Diameter is very important if the mecate will be used on a bosal. For proper balance of the bosal, the mecate should be the same size or an 1/8" smaller than the diameter of the bosal. For example, on a 5/8" bosal you could use either a 5/8" or 1/2" mecate.
Length is a combination of personal preference and necessity.
Traditionally, a mecate used on a hackamore was 22' long and a snaffle bit rope measured 20'. These traditions have undergone some changes as horses are larger today than they were even 40 years ago and people are riding with a longer rein.
Now 22' is the standard length for a snaffle bit mecate and most riders prefer an extra 2' for a mecate used on a bosal. A 24' rope gives them enough for the wraps around the bosal and leaves enough rope in the reins to ride with a longer, looser rein.
We are also happy to change these measurements to accommodate very large or very small horses.
This can be the hardest part of ordering a mecate, but also the most fun. The only limit is the imagination.
We can make mecates to match, compliment or contrast to any horse. Some of our clients are very specific about color and pattern, while others prefer to turn me loose with very few guidelines. Either approach is fine, that's what custom ordering gear is all about.
